Since March 2017, BIKEast has been an affiliate chapter of global movement, Cycling Without Age.
What is Cycling Without Age?
Cycling Without Age is a movement started in Denmark in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw – a three wheeled loung style e-bike – and offering free bike rides to people in aged and disability care support.
The program has spread globally and by 2023 with over 3,050 chapters and 4,900+ trishaws in action. In November 2019, CWA-Australia, was established to help new chapters starting offering governance and funding support.
What is BIKEast’s involvement?
BIKEast operates ride programs where its volunteer trained pilots drive these bikes, taking people living in care facilities, or in their own home, with aged and disability care support, out for rides.
Where are the trishaws?
There are currently four chapters operating trishaws in Sydney:
- Sydney-East (us!)
- Parramatta
- Western Sydney
- Sydney-North
With another two prospective.
BIKEast currently owns 2 trishaws purchased with thanks due to the City of Sydney and Woollahra Council’s jointly matching community grant; and Australian Government’s Kingsford-Smith Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) grant.
