Wentworth Courier – Wheels in motion for cycle route

Adrian Boss our Woollahra Advocacy Coordinator spoke to the Wentworth Courier:

Wheels in motion for cycle route

Marika, Martin and Lily Nabung with Cr Megan McEwin.

BLIND corners, pinch points and a deadly mix of cyclists and cars.

Marika Nabung said there was “absolutely no way” she would let her daughter Lily, 5, ride to Bondi Beach along O’Sullivan Rd.

“It’s pretty scary because cyclists are squeezed between parked cars and fast-moving traffic,” said Ms Nabung, of Rose Bay.

“Lily is too big for a child’s seat [on an adult bike]. It would be ideal for her to learn to ride by cycling to the beach as a family rather than using the car but it’s not safe.”

Ms Nabung has thrown her support behind Woollahra Council’s proposal to build a separated off-road route between Rose Bay wharf and the beach.

Greens Crs Megan McEwin and Matthew Robertson formed a cross-party alliance with Crs Toni Zeltzer and Nick Maxwell to set the plan’s wheels in motion and join forces with Waverley Council to deliver the project.

BIKEast spokesman Adrian Boss said the obvious route would be New South Head Rd and O’Sullivan Rd, which are in Woollahra’s jurisdiction, and then down Curlewis St, in Waverley’s patch.

Mr Boss called on the councils to deliver the project “as a matter of priority” while the proposed cycle route along New South Head Rd is being worked out.

He said cyclists were being forced to ride along footpaths because it’s too dangerous to ride on the road. “The O’Sullivan Rd traffic levels are too high for mixing cars and cyclists. There are pinch points at two blind corners, a roundabout and a pedestrian refuge,” he said.

Ms McEwin said the off-road route would be a way of showing the two councils could work well together to improve facilities across the East, despite avoiding a merger.

“This route would be well used and get kids and whole families out on their bikes,” she said

A Waverley Council spokeswoman said the route had already been identified in its 2013 bike plan but a specific study into the route had not been funded.
