More new construction zones to start in July
ALTRAC is pushing ahead with its CBD construction program, which is expanding into a total of seven zones between Circular Quay and Liverpool Street by the end of July 2016. Read on for more information about the new CBD zones and changes to traffic arrangements.
The team worked hard to secure our sites in June’s major storm, which affected many parts of Sydney. Our teams monitored environmental controls, removed shade cloth to prevent fencing from catching the wind, secured hoardings and used pumps where required.
Regular inspections were carried out across the entire alignment to check progress and to address any hazards arising from localised flooding and conditions, such as high water levels in the Centennial Parklands. While some clean-up of our work sites was required following the storms, along with ongoing monitoring, work was able to proceed with minimal interruption.

Surry Hills
As we get ready for construction to start in Surry Hills later this year, from August 2016, local residents and businesses were invited to attend a light rail forum on 8 June 2016. Members of the ALTRAC team were available, along with representatives of Transport for NSW and the Office of the Small Business Commissioner, to provide information and answer questions about the light rail design and upcoming works.
Before construction starts in the coming months the focus is on investigating and identifying services under Devonshire Street and surrounding streets. Local residents and businesses will continue to be notified about all works, and will receive detailed notification of major construction before work gets underway in August 2016, between Elizabeth and Chalmers streets.

Moore Park
A new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists has been constructed in Moore Park, in readiness for the new Anzac Parade diversion road. The shared path will run alongside the road, separated for safety, and will allow pedestrians and cyclists to continue their journey while the light rail tunnel is constructed under Anzac Parade.
It is anticipated that traffic will be diverted to the new, temporary road in July 2016. The diversion road is being built between the Albert ‘Tibby’ Cotter Walkway and the existing pedestrian crossing near Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls High Schools (see map below). For more information about the Anzac Parade diversion, see My Sydney news.
ALTRAC Light Rail, together with Transport for NSW, continues to work together with all of the stakeholders in the Moore Park area to support major events at the sports grounds – such as the double header rugby and AFL matches in May 2016. |

Randwick
Construction of the new acoustic wall in the Randwick Stabling Yard continued this month, with the majority of the 118 panels now installed. The acoustic wall will mitigate noise impacts for neighbouring residents during construction and when the light rail is operational.
Wansey Road works
Eleven large palm trees were relocated from Wansey Road, following the construction zone being established between Alison Road and High Street in early May 2016. The trees were carefully removed before the root ball was protected and the trees were relocated to a nursery, where they will be cared for until they can be replanted within the alignment.
A large number of Clivia plants were also removed from Wansey Road as the work site was cleared. Some of these were distributed to local residents on their request and distributed to their family and friends. Remaining plants were taken to the Randwick Council nursery for re-use.
Significant work is being undertaken to protect the horses within the Australian Turf Club site during the construction of light rail. The horses were recently moved to a temporary site, while acoustic barriers were installed around their stables to mitigate noise during construction and when light rail is operational.
Alison Road
Changes in construction arrangements along Wansey Road mean that a new cycling diversion is in place along Botany and Church Streets. A new crossing is being constructed at the Botany Street intersection with Alison Road which will assist cyclists to cross safely along the recommended route. |

Kensington and Kingsford
Construction is underway in Kensington on Anzac Parade, between Todman Avenue and High Street (Zone 29). In this zone, work is taking place in the centre of the roadway, along the existing median.
Initial works have focused on investigation and identification of utilities and services in the roadway. A number of unknown services have been discovered, highlighting the importance of this work to clear the way for construction.
Occupation of Zone 30 on Anzac Parade between High and Rainbow streets will start from August 2016. Work in this zone will be divided into two sections and construction will be staggered to minimise disruption to the local community. Night time work continues in Kingsford in preparation of taking occupation of this zone to facilitate the construction of the light rail. We will continue to keep local residents and business up-to-date about these works. |

Lilyfield
Members of the ALTRAC Light Rail design, construction and operations teams met with Lilyfield residents at a community information session on 31 May 2016.
Residents were given the opportunity to view the latest designs and hear about the activities that will take place at the new light rail maintenance depot adjacent to Lilyfield Road and Catherine Street, Lilyfield. We’d like to thank those who attended for their time, and for their feedback. The Community Reference Group has also met to provide feedback on the proposed designs.
Work is underway on site, with the first phase of work focusing on demolition of existing buildings and site clearing. |
