Funding for the Regional Bike Route Network
The NSW Liberal Party has committed $330 million to the development of bike route network (over the next 5 years) while the Labor Party has promised $412 million for ‘active transport’ projects (over the next 5 years).
Will you lobby to ensure that the higher of these two commitments are actually delivered in the next term of government?
BIKEast’s priorities include the development of an Inner Sydney Regional Cycle network and similar initiatives aligned with the State Government’s Sydney Cycling Future and Greater Sydney Commission’s Green Grid to improve regional route connectivity.
Do you support the development of this network and, specifically, can you assure us that you will lobby for the following projects in the next term of government?
- Construction of a high-standard, protected cycleway along General Bridges Crs and Sturt St, Kingsford – between Gardners Rd and Avoca St.
- Construction of a high-standard, protected cycleway along Anzac Pde between Kingsford (Sturt St) and Maroubra Junction (Fitzgerald Ave).
- Upgrades to existing recreational bike routes in Sir Joseph Banks Park.
- Further planning/consultation for extension of the Wentworth Ave bike route between Bay St and Eastgardens.
- Initiation of planning/consultation for a high-standard, protected cycleway along Banks Ave (between Eastgardens and General Bridges Crs)
- Initiation of planning/consultation for a high-standard bike route along Denison St – linking Banksmeadow and to Eastgardens.
- Initiation of planning/consultation for a high-standard bike route along Heffron Rd – linking Banks Ave and Page St, Pagewood.
- Initiation of planning/consultation for a high-standard bike route linking Mascot with the Botany-Banksmeadow-Port Botany industrial precinct.
- Wayfinding signage review and installation of signage for the Eastern Sydney Bays & Beaches Route (scenic coastal bike route) between South Coogee and La Perouse.
Will you lobby for funding to support the Safe-Streets Neighbourhood approach and similar strategies to encourage active travel in your electorate?
Will you lobby for funding to support strategies to encourage more children to walk and ride to school?
Candidate responses
Rowan Kos (Keep Sydney Open)
Thankyou to BIKEast for contacting myself as the candidate for Maroubra and the Keep Sydney Open Party, with 42 local candidates in total and 21 candidates in the Upper House(Senate). We are all for an Open and Honest Sydney.
Whilst I am the local Candidate for Maroubra I am also joined by Joseph O’Donaghue in Coogee and Mark MacSmith in Vaucluse, we are aligned on Eastern Suburbs policy issues such as BIKEast, Waverley Bowls and the Cruise Terminal.
The one bicycle policy we are currently prepared to legislate for is that bicycle helmets become optional and the riders choice. Our party is open and always ready to hear more from voters. Please review our listed policies here. https://www.keepsydneyopen.com/policy
Regarding the BIKEast cycle way proposals. Keep Sydney Open’s mandate is to keep the Government of the day honest at all levels, you have our total commitment, not only to legislate for anti corruption measures, we will also make sure the Government in power shall deliver on their promises, they will deliver on budget and they will deliver on time. We will harass/publicise any failures endlessly on your behalf. Locally my stance is to follow the lead of Local Council who are best equipped to connect with local community on many issues, should I understand that Local Council is going against the majority of community sentiment I will certainly seek to mediate better outcomes. I shall lobby for increased funding to
support these community initiatives which are being led by council.
We are pro Safe Streets and pro Bicycle Education; both these strategies obviously tie into increased public health, better traffic management and better sustainability outcomes across the Eastern Suburbs and Greater Sydney. Once again when it comes to details we are committed to supporting local council regarding routes, zones and will advocate for funding.
I must say that we will have substantially increased funding to spend on a variety of issues across NSW, this is because we will repoen Sydney and state revenue will increase by several hundred million dollars. Leading Economic Reporter Deloitte has registered an estimate of an additional $16 Billion annually should the lockout laws be removed and Sydneys night time economy(NTE) be managed properly in a diversified way.
Thankyou for engaging with us, we are also visionaries for a better Sydney and we are always Open to new ideas.
Best Regards,
Rowan Kos
