Councillor candidates – Bondi Ward

  • A – Greens – Dominic Wy Kanak (full response)
    • Supportive – If Greens are elected to Waverley Council on 9th September, 2017, We will be requesting Our Councillor Colleagues to support immediate measures to undertake and support: – an urgent assessment of funding allocation for cycling infrastructure, – establishment of a bicycle committee of Council, reporting directly to Council, and with an informal delegate to the Waverley Traffic Committee.  The bicycle committee could include external experts in bicycle planning, BIKEast representatives, as well as bicycle users from the Waverley community, such as some of the People present at Transition Bondi ‘s ‘Film & Feast, ‘Bikes versus Cars’ Night, as well as Waverley Council’s Sustainable Transport Officer and a Councillor from every ward, to undertake an urgent review of links between Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction to promote safe, separated cycleways.
  • B – Liberal – Leon Goltsman / Lynda Hall (full response)
    • Supportive – Refer to Sally Bett’s response.
  • C – Labor – John Wakefield (full response)
    • Supportive – Yes, Waverley Labor supports these projects. We have just released our “Getting Around Waverley” policy and the Bondi Junction cycleway implementation and the Martins Ave route improvement are aspects of that policy. The other projects we support in principle and over the coming years will guide through planning, funding & implementation if elected.  Yes, we do endorse the Safe-Streets Neighbourhood approach to planning. We have initiated similar programs over many years. The 40km speed limit and associated traffic calming in Bondi Basin is perhaps the most high profile such initiative of Waverley Labor. Another is our Green Links program, linking laneway, parks and other safe walking spaces into a sign posted network.

Councillor candidates – Hunter Ward

  • A – Labor
    • Awaiting response
  • B – Liberal – Sally Betts / Will Nemesh (full response)
    • Supportive – Can I start by saying thank you, because I don’t believe that without your assistance we could have progressed as well as we have with our Bondi Junction Cycle path. I am still shocked that the Labor and Greens Councillors voted against the cycle path some months back and then we nearly lost it a second time recently.  We have slowly worked through every intersection and issue that we need to with success. Unfortunately, it has taken some time due to the issues raised by various external stakeholders, like RMS, Transport4NDSW, and State Transit. We believe that the setback at the Waverley Deport has now been resolved, as well as all other matters. The Liberals have worked closely with the Minister and Department to ensure that the bike route progresses, even through the lengthy delays experienced. We have now had our money for the project reinstated. We are working with the Government about the funding of the project between Bronte Road and Adelaide street and of course right through to Bondi Road. The Waverley Liberals are happy to commit to:• Making neighbourhood streets safe for all to use and enjoy
      • Design or redesign local neighbourhood streets and main corridors to cater for improved bike travel, while working with the RMS, Sydney Buses and the Police
      • Lobby for 30kph (or 40kph) zones where appropriate and permitted
      • Primarily serve residential needs while maintaining essential vehicular access
      • Improve amenity through adaptations that serve people’s use and enjoyment
      • Improving every street in Waverley to be safe for cyclists.
  • C – Independent – Miriam Guttman-Jones
    • “Should I be reelected, I will give serious consideration to a sustainable policy.”

If elected I will continue to work with the bike community to promote safe and sustainable bike paths and access.”

    • Supportive – Please see answers on behalf of all Greens candidates in the Woollahra Council election.
On a personal note, I use my bike as my main form of transport and have an e-bike that can carry me, my 8 year old daughter plus groceries. I love riding but often feel unsafe if I venture onto Oxford Street or other major roads and this is stopping me from using the bike for trips outside the local area. I know that many people are like me and would use their bike as their main form of transport if only there were safe, separated bike paths.  This is one of the main reasons I am running for Council.   Greens Councillors Nicola Grieve and Susan Jarnason were instrumental in having the Bike Plan adopted by Woollahra Council.  The Greens will continue to push for the rollout of this Bike Plan and these routes as a minimum.  However, The Greens will also push for safer separated bike paths on Oxford Street, New South Head Road and to all public and private schools in the Woollahra LGA. To deliver bike paths that cross Council boundaries, Greens Councillors pledge to work with Waverley and Sydney City Councillors to foster cross-Council cooperation and increase the chances of a good outcome for cyclists.

    • Supportive – As someone who rode a bike to school every day all through high school, rode everywhere all through university and was one of the first people crazy enough to commute on a bicycle in London back in the 80’s (and I can tell you that was scary, although the rarity gave one a certain ethereal protection), I’m very happy to support safer options for cyclists in and around Sydney and encourage more people, especially children, to experience the enjoyment, convenience, fitness and environmental benefits of cycling.  Not being on Council yet, I don’t feel sufficiently well briefed to offer an informed opinion on the specific projects you mention, but, as I say, very happy to follow the correct processes to ensure these options are properly reviewed if elected.  Philosophically, Residents First is opposed to overdevelopment in Woollahra and any more strain on our overloaded infrastructure. We support and will be actively lobbying for anything that can reduce congestion and improve traffic flows around our suburbs, such as more and better public transport, especially buses and ferries, and better cycling conditions and facilities would have to be an integral part of that solution.
