Botany Foreshore – the search for better bike routes

In March 2019, BIKEast organised a ride to investigate existing and future cycling connections to the Botany foreshore and around the Botany / Banksmeadow area.

This is the route we took:

Note: BIKEast do not recommend crossing Foreshore Rd North at Hale St – this was a intentional investigation to identify the lack of safe connectivity at the North of Sir Joseph Banks Park.

The Eastern route we took (see above) is the future planned route by Bayside Council and includes a bicycle boulevarde along Wilson St, a low speed street that discourages cut-through motor-vehicle traffic but allow local motor-vehicle traffic.

The return route is a quiet route using the backstreets and avoiding the busy Stephen Road.

An additional route (not pictured) is a future Mill Pond greenway route that follows the water and connects to Botany Rd.

How to support these routes?

Interested in these connections?  We urge you to write to your local and state representatives to support these projects when the concept designs are eventually put up for endorsement and funding.  Show your representatives that cycling matters and how important these connections are to you.

Bike Trail: Beat The Bus

BikeTrail Blog has also recently started a series of articles called Beat the Bus.
“The purpose of these articles is to come up with popular rides where you can easily beat public transport whilst not riding too fast. To qualify, a ride needs to be going to a place where a lot of people travel to, the roads need to be shared path or at least a decent enough well marked council road. Average speed must be under 20km per hour. And the whole journey needs to be under 45 minutes.”
