Local councils need to work to reduce clutter and consider all types of infrastructure installed on paths (especially large advertising panels)
The placement and design of infrastructure (including but not limited to payphones, signage, poles, advertising panels, bus stops) on all paths, and especially designated ‘Shared Paths’ must be reviewed to consider the safety of people riding bicycles and people walking or using personal mobility vehicles.
It is very important to the community to have good quality bus stops for seating and shading of people waiting for buses, however, advertising signage should NOT be installed in locations where it impedes visibility of path users approaching from opposite directions or people waiting for a bus/ride share taxi. Often people waiting may be watching for their ride and step out from behind signage unexpectedly.
If different path users are unable to see each other or anticipate direction of movement, there is a higher risk of conflict and serious incidents, especially if someone accidently falls into the path of road traffic or a heavy vehicle.
Some visual examples of placements below:
Advertising board on shared path grouped with payphone (Bourke St, City of Sydney) -
Good placement on Macquarie St - with space and visibility around bus stop angles -
Poor placement of advertising panel on bus stop on Wilberforce Ave / New South Head Rd obstructing visibility, recently installed in 2024. (Woollahra Council) -
Good bus stop with clear panel instead of advertising panel for effective visibility on shared path - Victoria Rd/Old South Rd, Bellevue Hill (Woollahra Council)
