Projects

Regional Bicycle Coordinator

2004

BIKEast wants to see a position of a cycleway coordinator established for the Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.  This person’s main role will be to coordinate the provision of bicycle facilities across administrations.  The position tasks are to ensure bicycle network, cyclists’ safety and facilities issues are resolved, priorities are made to coincide across administrations and to identify constraints to completing the network during this decade.  Two key roles will be to facilitate clearance of key bicycle initiatives through local or regional Traffic Committees and to facilitate the obtaining of any necessary State level support and approvals.

BIKEast has developed this proposal and will now take it up with the Councils, DIPNR and the RTA and other state agencies seeking to have it funded and a person appointed.  (City of Sydney is creating a similar staff position for its area).

Regional Network of Bicycle Routes

2004

BIKEast’s August 2003 Forum produced a desired network that would link the most important areas within the eastern suburbs and to adjoining services, facilities and suburbs, including the Sydney CBD.

Important routes were identified, such as: the Coastline Cycleway - Watsons Bay to La Perouse; Sydney Harbour Cycleway - Circular Quay to Watsons Bay; Bondi Beach to the City of Sydney, through Bondi Junction and Paddington; Bondi Junction to UNSW; Coogee Beach to Green Square; and the Botany Bay Trail.  Defining these routes and mapping them is underway and a program to obtain Council endorsements will follow during 2004 and 2005.

Centennial Parklands

2004

Centennial Park, Moore Park and Queens Park are magnets for recreational cyclists (of all ages) and the areas managed by the Parklands Trust also incorporate some very popular routes for cycling commuters.

The Parklands Trust has recently published its Transport Access Plan (Sinclair Knight Mertz).

Current BIKEast projects include:

  • improving access for bicycles to the Centennial Park gates.
  • ensuring sensible linkages with adjoining local and regional bike routes.
  • ensuring safe/practical designs are implemented for shared-use facilities.
  • developing a code of conduct for bicycle users.
